Heaphy Track - Day 3, Saxon Hut to Lewis Hut 24.1km

An early start today.
It is more than a half marathon.

We are walking from the Saxon Hut through the rolling Gouland Downs red tussock land  to Mackay Hut and down the moss and fern clad Mackay hill track to Lewis hut on the banks of the Heaphy river.

Come walk with us.

Into the Mackay Downs
for a rest and refreshment.

To Mackay Hut for lunch.

Over a coal seam

As we follow the track downhill the gentle rain moistens the mosses and ferns.

A peek at the Heaphy river far below.

The Heaphy river meets the Tasman Sea.

Richard and Craig who are doing DoC track work are in residence at Lewis Hut.
The stream supplying water to the hut has dried up and they have helpfully filled water jerry cans for us to use.
Dinner is coming...
and so is another night on the sleeping platform.
